When it comes to engineering success, the shortest distance between two points isn’t a straight line . . . it’s online.  Engineering Distance Education at Iowa State University gives you the opportunity to enhance your careers through online learning.  Our 100% online graduate courses and programs allow you to remain at your present job and location while continuing your education and advancing in your field.  Students learn from the same respected professors and in the same classes as our resident students do - but from anywhere in the world.  EDE - the shortest distance to your dreams.

Lectures
EDE classes are delivered to off-campus students through an online system called WebCT.  Iowa State faculty members will be teaching their course to an on-campus audience at the same time our staff captures the course for off-campus delivery.  While you are not required to watch the classes live, most classes offered through EDE can be viewed in real-time if preferred.  Once the live class lecture has taken place students may view or download the archived lecture online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the remainder of the semester.  This allows you to watch the class at a time that fits into your schedule; and enables you to refer to past lectures at anytime.

Course Notes
Faculty in-class lecture notes are posted on-line in WebCT, so you'll use the same convenient portal to access all of your course materials.  In addition to course notes, any other materials given to us by the instructor will be posted online as well.

Homework
Homework assignments will be submitted either directly to EDE or to the instructor via e-mail, fax, or through WebCT; depending on instructor preference.  All homework faxed or emailed to the EDE office is tracked in a log book so you can be assured that your homework was received and passed onto the instructor.  Graded homework assignments that instructors want returned to students will be scanned and emailed directly to you through WebCT.

Exams

All students registering for an online course through EDE are required to select a proctor to administer exams.  Exams will be emailed to your proctor; and at the same time our office will send an e-mail notification to you stating the exam has been sent.  Students will then set up a time with their proctor to take the exam following the same guidelines and instructions as the on-campus students.  While we recommend that all faculty give the off-campus students some length of turn-around time to complete and return exams, the actual due dates are established by the individual instructors.  Completed exams are faxed or emailed back to the EDE office or to the instructor.  Graded exams are returned through WebCT, just as graded homework is.
