CE 421/521 Environmental is an emerging field within environmental engineering. It encompasses the use of natural and genetically engineered microorganisms to provide benefit o mankind and the environment. The course will focus on the physiology of icroorganisms, biochemical reactions of microbes, the environmental conditions that favor heir growth, and the protection of public health from pathogens. Current literature articles ill be discussed in a group setting.

Course Objectives:
A term paper on a current environmental biotechnology topic will be required. Wastewater treatment plant modeling will be conducted using BioWin™ software. Students enrolled in E521 will be involved with literature review and discussion. See the course website: http:// ome.eng.iastate.edu/~tge/ce421-521/for examples and more information. The text for the lass will be Environmental Biotechnology, by Rittmann and McCarty or similar. Additional eferences for the class include Wastewater Microbiology, by Bitton and Biological and Wastewater reatment, by Grady, Daigger and Lim.

About the Instructor
Tim Ellis, Ph.D., P.E. has taught and conducted research in
environmental engineering at Iowa State University since 1995. Prior to teaching, he has spent several years with an international consulting firm where he was the lead process design engineer for a 7.5 million gallon per day water treatment plant. He spent a year in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates where he was a senior engineer working on the city’s wastewater treatment and reclamation facility design. He is the inventor of the static granular bed reactor, a novel anaerobic digestion process that converts organic wastes to a renewable energy source in the form of biogas.
