GPS and automatic machine control are revolutionizing earth-moving
and paving construction. This two part course gives a solid
introduction to this exciting new technology:
- CE 594E (1 cr.) explains the concepts behind the technology
with a panel of expert guest speakers, many of whom had influenced the
original implementation of this system
- CE 594F (1 cr.) leads
students through hands on computer exercises that demonstrate
conversion from design files to machine control files.
Prerequisites:
Students may take these classes together or separately. Students with
limited knowledge of machine control concepts should take CE 594E
before attempting CE 594F. Both courses are self paced, but must be
completed within the semester that they were started. Exceptions may be
granted by permission of the instructor.
Course Objectives and Expected Outcomes
During the course, students will:
- Demonstrate the process required to produce a machine control file by:
-
Enhancing design files so they are ready for conversion to machine control files
-
Converting design files to machine control files
-
Simulating the loading machine control files into construction machinery
- Study the process of setting up an RTK GPS system.
- Review the process of collecting topographical data using RTK GPS.
Assessment of student learning will be accomplished by submitting completed machine
control files and evidence of having successfully simulated loading of files to construction
machinery. Some assessment will also be accomplished by web based testing over lecture and
reading material.
