Tony Smith received his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1980.  He was appointed to the faculty at Iowa State that same year, and has been chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies since 2002.  Professor Smith is the author of five books, including Technology and Capital: A Marxian Critique of the New Economy (2000) and Globalisation: A Systematic Marxian Account.  Most recently in 2008 he co-edited an anthology entitled Dialectics for the New Century, which included his article, "Towards a Systematic Dialectic of Globalization."
