Forget the perils of the wild:
it’s a jungle in there—there, inside that small box
of circuits, wires, and silicon chips you used to access the website
you’re reading now. Today, criminals are as likely to ravage your
life through a broadband connection as in your home or on the street.
And as the cyberworld only expands in the 21st century, so
will opportunities for the unscrupulous to victimize people, businesses,
and even whole nations.
Welcome to the jungle.
Virtually everything we do
today relies on computation to make it work. So if we’re to preserve
our way of life in the years to come, we need men and women who can
protect our information systems from those who would prey on our prosperity,
our privacy, and even our children. That’s why in 1999 the Information
Assurance Center at Iowa State was named as one of the first seven “Centers
of Excellence” by the National Security Agency, and why today we offer
advanced education in this field in its natural element—online, to
U.S. students only.
Because cyber-security is a
multifaceted discipline, the Masters of Science in Information Assurance
is a multidisciplinary degree, supported by six departments from three
Iowa State Colleges: Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering,
Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Logistics, Operations
and Management Information Systems, Mathematics, and Political Science.
